Our weekly group sessions, held on our beautiful 4 acre equine therapy site, are specifically designed for children and young people between the ages of 8 and 14 years old who have barriers to education, EOTAS Packages, are Home Educated or have low level SEN need.
Through these sessions we will introduce the children to our pioneering, nature based and equine facilitated learning programme. This programme is designed to support children with building confidence, independence and life skills, as well as forming friendships and finding strategies to help them with a range of challenges. Supported by our team of therapy horses, including 4 Miniature Shetlands and our herd of bigger breeds.
Set amongst 4 acres of fields with views stretching over the South Gloucestershire countryside, we can offer some really out of the box, exciting opportunities for play, learning and development!
This programme was created by Jo McMeechan and is delivered by her team of practitioners. Jo is a highly Specialist Children's Physiotherapist and Advanced Practitioner in Hippotherapy and Equine Facilitated Physiotherapy, specialising in neurology and brain development in children with additional needs. She and many of her team are also SEN Parents themselves or have a background in health, social care and education and so understand the importance of a trauma informed, holistic, sensory friendly approach to learning and development that centres around fun and progressive success.
The programme has been adapted from years of successful provision with Jo as a practitioner to include ground work with the herd. It focuses on enhancing skills in wellbeing covering the domains of:
We really value getting kids moving and interacting in the freedom of nature, using movement to support physical, sensory and emotional wellbeing to enhance learning. We can integrate this in a way that supports children regardless of need.
The very nature of being outdoors brings so many opportunities for sensory regulation through movement and sensory play. A regulated nervous system builds attention and regulation skills, and is a crucial part of access to learning.
Research has repeatedly shown that horses and humans are able to connect and respond to one another based on shared facial expressions and body language - we understand one another by default, making it easier to connect!
Children will be able to choose from a range of semi-structured activities and will have access to our 4 acre site, time with our herd of therapy ponies and a weather-proof space in our barn or sensory dome.
Learning will range from Natural Horsemanship activities such as herd dynamics, grooming, pony care and equine behaviour studies to Nature Based Play activities such as sensory gardening, nature trails, exploring the changing seasons and hands on building / creating tasks.
Hey, I'm Kate! I'm an Equine Facilitated Learning Therapist at SENStory.
I am also a qualified social worker with over 20 years experience in providing support to children, young people and their families who are social excluded. I work in an attachment and trauma informed way with the children I support.
At home I have a dog, cat, two children and an allotment which keeps life full and interesting! I also share a horse who I love to explore the countryside with!
I really enjoy sharing the power of horses and nature to help when life gets tricky.
Hiya! I’m Abi and I look after the ponies & plan or execute the building of things on site that we need for either ponies or sessions.
I Home Educate my 2 daughters who are usually with me at SENStory. We have just started our 6th year so I have a deep understanding of the ins & outs of Home Education. Mollie & Izzy are 12 & 10 and love helping us complete our jobs around the yard.
Outside of SENStory I have a passion for working within SEN. I am a Personal Assistant for a young gentleman with Autism and really enjoy the wins with the communication challenges & making his life easier as much as I can. It’s so vital to provide access to society within the realms of their disability so these young people can flourish.
SENStory suits me down to the ground…nature, ponies, fresh air & making young people happy! Perfect!
When: Tuesdays during term time
Sessions are facilitated in child friendly, accessible outdoor spaces, in our arena, barn, or fields - accessible and inclusive for a wide range of needs.
Fun, child-led play, lies at the centre of the services, through everyday experiences combined with assessment, planning and goal orientated sessions.
Getting inventive with grooming for example, provides unique opportunities to work at different heights and positions, reaching up, down and across the pony’s body. In turn, with the support and direction from the Physiotherapy team, we are able to work on balance reactions, muscle engagement, fine motor control, shoulder stability and introduce sensory rich experiences through grooming alone. Opportunities for enhancing language and communication, alongside self care, social and emotional skills are also extensive as we facilitate the connection of neural pathways that link these areas of development and support neuroplasticity (brain learning).
For our ambulant and adventurous clients, we engage in these skills through nature hunts and obstacle courses with the ponies, staying within our dedicated and accessible areas for children who need a greater level of support with their movement skills. The setting, ponies and opportunities we can provide, really enhance intrinsic motivation for learning with some profound effects that are underpinned by research and literature.
Please get in touch if you'd like to talk to one of the team about whether this group provision is right for your child.
